Michael Akerlow

In his role as Deputy Director of the Department of Community and Neighborhoods for Salt Lake City Corporation, Michael Akerlow is responsible for the oversight of five divisions critical to the success of community development: Planning, Transportation, Housing and Neighborhood Development, Engineering, and Building Services.
In his previous role as the Director of Housing and Neighborhood Development he was responsible for the management of federal grant programs, in addition to overseeing the city’s housing, capital asset management and capital improvements programs; real estate services; and the Sorenson Unity Center with the mission to revitalize, strengthen and support Salt Lake City communities.
Prior to working for Salt Lake City, Akerlow was involved in real estate development, focusing on infill and mixed-use developments that included retail components designed specifically for local businesses. As a small business owner, Akerlow accepted leadership roles within local business groups and served on numerous boards. His involvement in the community includes being a former chair of the Foothill Sunnyside Community Council and member of the city’s Land Use Appeals Board.
Akerlow holds a B.A. in English from the University of Utah, where he graduated a member of Phi Kappa Phi. He received his M.S. in Real Estate Development from Columbia University.
